Exam format

Two sessions using a mix of item sets and constructed-response essay sets. Candidates choose one Level III pathway at registration: Portfolio Management, Private Markets, or Private Wealth. Check CFA Institute for the current format before your exam.

The selected pathway is the largest single component at roughly 30–35% of the Level III exam weight.

Constructed-response (essay) questions require you to write full answers, not just select from choices.

Common-core areas include asset allocation, portfolio construction, performance measurement, derivatives and risk management, and ethics.

Private Wealth is its own pathway, not a topic that applies to every Portfolio Management pathway candidate.

Most candidates spend 5–7 months preparing, at 14–22 hours per week.

Format details change periodically. Always verify the current exam structure on cfainstitute.org before your exam.

CFA Level 3 questions

How is CFA Level 3 structured?

CFA Institute now structures Level 3 around a common core plus one selected pathway: Portfolio Management, Private Markets, or Private Wealth. The exam uses both item sets and constructed-response essay sets.

Do all CFA Level 3 candidates study Private Wealth?

No. Private Wealth is one of the specialized Level 3 pathways. Candidates in the Portfolio Management pathway or Private Markets pathway receive pathway-specific content instead.

How do I practice for the essay portion?

Most candidates practice by writing full-length answers to past questions released by CFA Institute, then comparing against guideline answers. exclam.ai can generate short-answer practice from your uploaded notes but does not reproduce official past questions.

How much time does CFA Level 3 take?

Candidates typically report 300 to 400+ hours for Level 3. Most prepare over 5 to 7 months at 14 to 22 hours per week.

Is Level 3 harder than Level 2?

Opinions vary. Content-wise Level 3 is often rated easier than Level 2, but the constructed-response format introduces a different difficulty — writing speed, answer structure, and time management become critical.
