50 multiple-choice questions, 1.5 hours, passing score 70%. Taken at PSI testing centers; minimum age 16. Required for the initial flight or ground instructor certificate unless you already hold a teaching credential the FAA accepts.

How long should I study for the FOI?
Most candidates are ready in 2-3 weeks at under an hour a day. The corpus is one handbook (~1,300 minutes of structured reading in exclam.ai’s plan); the test asks 50 questions at a 70% pass bar.
Is the FOI hard?
CY2025: 99.07% pass rate and 92.13% average score. These results describe that year’s candidates, not the causes of passing or failing. Use practice to check your understanding of learning and teaching concepts.
Do I need the FOI if I am already a teacher?
Holders of certain teaching credentials (e.g., a current teacher certificate or university faculty position) may be exempt — check 14 CFR 61.185 and confirm with your FSDO before scheduling.
What materials do I need to buy?
