## Exam format

Two 2-hour 12-minute sessions. Vignette-based item sets — each vignette includes a short scenario followed by 4 or 6 multiple-choice questions. Offered three times per year.

Item-set format tests application, not memorization — you read a short case then answer 4 or 6 linked questions.

Financial Statement Analysis and Equity Investments are typically the heaviest sections by content volume.

Many candidates rate Level 2 as the hardest of the three levels due to depth and density.

Most candidates spend 5–7 months preparing, at 14–22 hours per week.

Format details change periodically. Always verify the current exam structure on [cfainstitute.org](https://www.cfainstitute.org/) before your exam.

## CFA Level 2 questions

How is CFA Level 2 different from Level 1?

Level 2 uses vignette-based item sets instead of stand-alone multiple-choice. Each vignette presents a case, then asks 4 or 6 linked questions. You need to apply concepts, not just recall them.

How many hours should I study for CFA Level 2?

Candidates typically report 300 to 400+ hours for Level 2. Most prepare over 5 to 7 months at 14 to 22 hours per week.

What is the hardest topic on CFA Level 2?

Candidates most often cite Financial Statement Analysis and Equity Investments as the most demanding sections by content volume. Derivatives and Fixed Income are sometimes cited as the most conceptually difficult.

Does exclam.ai generate vignette-style practice?

exclam.ai generates quizzes and flashcards from your uploaded materials. If your source material includes vignettes or case studies, exclam.ai can produce questions in that format; otherwise it defaults to single-stem multiple-choice.
